FAQ

How often will I need to volunteer?

We ask that regular volunteers commit to volunteering a minimum of 12 times per year. Many of our volunteers work 2-4 hours per week, and other volunteers work 2-4 hours once or twice a month. We also have special events 2-3 times a year, in which many community volunteers are needed. We always appreciate any dedicated volunteers who wish to give more time.

What days and times are volunteer opportunities?

We have volunteer opportunities available seven days a week. If you wish to work in the Pantry when it is open, shifts are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday 9-12 and Tuesday and Thursday 3-6. Other activities occur at various times throughout the day and week.

Do I need any special background to volunteer?

We provide training for each of our volunteer opportunities, so you do not need any special background. Some tasks require specific skills, such as computer skills for entering records or the ability to lift heavy boxes. However, the only general requirement is a caring and positive, respectful attitude toward other volunteers and the families we serve.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

Children and youth are welcome to work on special projects or support services as well as at Open Volunteer Time or Open Garden Time with a parent or guardian. Youth who work without a guardian when the Pantry is open must be in 9th grade or above and have completed Volunteer Orientation. Please refer to the Volunteer Handbook for NLCP’s policy on minors.
